| Dear Abby: Stepdad doesn’t know I saw him in women’s clothing - Chicago Sun-Times Posted: 02 Aug 2019 03:00 AM PDT DEAR ABBY: I saw something shocking, and I need help. While working at my job at a hospital, I saw the man my mother is married to. He was there for an appointment. He did not see me, and I didn't have the courage to approach him because he was dressed as a woman. There is no mistaking it was him. I don't know how to even begin to handle this. He has always been wonderful, especially to my mom. I am afraid if I don't tell her, she will find out and be destroyed, and if I do tell her, the same thing will happen. What do I do? — HURT AND CONFUSED DEAR HURT: Talk to your mother's husband — who may be a cross-dresser or have gender identity issues — about the fact that you saw him and give him a chance to explain. Do not be surprised if he tells you your mother is aware that he dresses this way some of the time. DEAR ABBY: My husband was previously married for five years and had been widowed shortly before we met. He and his late wife had matching tattoo wedding bands. They had agreed they'd both be cremated upon their demise and that eventually they would be "reunited" by combining their ashes after his death. My question is, what can we do to honor our marriage vows without removing the tattoo that will be respectful yet completely our own symbol of our vows? Secondly, I'm uncomfortable with the combining of their ashes. I'm 48 years old, and he is 44, so we have the potential for many more years of marriage than they had, but I do not want to completely dismiss her memory. What should I do about this? — SECOND WIFE IN THE MIDWEST DEAR WIFE: You could honor your wedding vows by wearing matching wedding rings. As for the "ashes" promise, talk to your husband about what his wishes currently are should he predecease you. He may have changed his mind about combining his ashes with hers — or not. If the two of you are together longer than he was with his first wife, his feelings on the subject may change. DEAR ABBY: My son got married a little over a year ago. They have a new baby. They are heavily in debt. He works full time plus a job on Saturday. She could work as a substitute teacher but prefers to stay at home with the baby. I'm concerned about my son working so much. She brought indebtedness into this marriage. She agreed to work and now she doesn't. It doesn't seem fair to our boy. He's very kind and has a sensitive heart. Should I say something? — CONCERNED MOM DEAR CONCERNED: It may not seem fair, but do not insert yourself into this situation. Your "boy" is now an adult, and it's important that you let him speak up for himself. If you interfere — even though you are trying to help — you will come across as overbearing, which may cost you a relationship with your daughter-in-law and your grandchild. | Women's clothing start-up promising stress-free shopping expands footprint - Chain Store Age Posted: 02 Aug 2019 07:22 AM PDT REAL ESTATE M.M.LaFleur has put down roots in Houston. The New York-based online women's clothing brand and styling service has opened a 2,300-sq.-ft. location at Post Oak Central, a mixed-use development in Houston's Uptown neighborhood. It is M.M.LaFluer's seventh permanent showroom and follows a successful pop-up in the Bayou City. Other locations include New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and pop-ups in Seattle and Portland. Launched in 2013 by Sarah LaFleur, Narie Foster and Miyako Nakamura, the former head designer of Zac Posen, M.M.LaFleur was founded with a goal of helping women rethink the shopping process by taking the work out of dressing for work. The company targets professional women with a curated assortment of versatile pieces — everything is designed in house — that have a sophisticated, minimalistic aesthetic and are designed to look good on a range of body types. Many of the fabrics are machine washable. Prices range from approximately $110 for a top to $325 for a statement dress. Personal styling support is core to the M.M.LaFleur experience — online and off. Showroom customers fill out a brief online survey and arrive to find a selection of items curated to their fit and style preferences waiting in the dressing room for try on. They can work one-on-one with a personal stylist while enjoying coffee and prosecco. Hemline alterations are provided free of charge. "During your complimentary hour-long stylist session, our goal is to treat you to the most productive, personalized, and stress-free shopping experience of your life," the company says on its website. Online, the brand is best known for its "Bento Box." A customer take a quick online survey and, based on the results, a MM stylist creates a personalized box that includes a selection of clothing item and accessories. The company emphasizes that the offering is not a subscription service. After a customer receives her first Bento, she can re-order — or not — as often as she likes. Tom Havron with Newmark Knight Frank led leasing efforts for M.M.LaFleur's street level retail space at Post Oak on behalf of Parkway Property Investments. "Post Oak Central provides our clients with a prime Post Oak Blvd. location near The Galleria with easy access and parking," said Katie Twidwell, senior director of retail operations and experience, M.M.LaFleur "The gallery-like space is a perfect backdrop for our collection, allowing us to expand our inventory beyond the pop up and also providing us the capability to host in-store events." Post Oak Central, which is LEED-Gold certified, was designed by legendary architect Philip Johnson. Encompassing three, 24-story Class A office towers totaling 1.2 million sq. ft., the 17-acre complex features one of Uptown's largest green spaces in addition to one of the area's highest walk scores. |

| Local women's clothing store celebrates 45 years - KBTX Posted: 21 Jul 2019 12:00 AM PDT COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX)- Women's clothing store Charli, in College Station, is celebrating opening their doors 45 years ago this month. On July 12, 1974, at only 23 years-old, Charli Light began her clothing store on Texas Avenue. Light says at one point, she was given 90 days to move out of her space on Texas Avenue. Since then, more than 40 years ago, Charli relocated to University Avenue, where it has been ever since. "In the beginning, I didn't want to work for anyone. I had big ideas, and wanted to do it myself, but didn't have any money," said Light, "I had to figure out how to get financing, and I got someone to cosign. I paid off the loan in six months and now its history." Light says over the years, with the city of College Station growing, she has focused on staying on-trend, as well as growing her online presence to adapt to the times. |
