I bang on about the lack of support for young Irish designers quite a bit on this blog. But I feel that it is an area that we are doing nothing about and I always hear designers complaining about a lack of funding or support but yet, doing nothing to get it.
One of my pet peeves is when magazines mislabel Irish Designers as UK designers. It annoys me because we have so few designers who are current success stories. We have the talent but we lack the publicity. However it has been a great year for Irish design with the appointment of J W Anderson at Versus (Versace no less!!!) and celebrities wearing designs from Simone Rocha.
But I was annoyed this month by an article in ELLE UK. In their January 2013 issue they have a brief chat about British design and how they consider Kylie to be English even though she is Australian. They also talk about selecting an English designer for the star to be photographed in. So they chose Simone Rocha to help celebrate British style.
For those of you who don't think Simone but know Rocha then you will already know that she belongs to the Rocha family and that John Rocha is her daddy. So she's not exactly a newbie to fashion - its in her blood. Also, she is born, bred and educated in Ireland, in National College of Art and Design no less. But according to ELLE because she shows at London Fashion Week, she's British.
Anyone else annoyed? Or is it just me??? So we are celebrating British style by using an Australian singer wearing an Irish designer dress. How the hell do they work that one out?!?!?!?
The same happened earlier in the month as websites rushed to report the JW Anderson appointment, they forgot to mention that he is Irish.
I am so sick of there being no recognition for Irish design when we are so much more then shit aran jumpers and lace. I would also like it if ELLE got their intern out of their arse and got him or her to fact check their stories before going to press. Get. It. Right so I can stop writing these blog posts.
- Oh and if anyone has the issue and is looking for the blurb that upset me - you can find it on page 148.
