Oh, how I've missed old school spoof comedies. Before the grim specters of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer stole the spotlight and practically ruined the genre, Abrahams, Zucker, and Zucker ruled the land with some of the greatest comedies ever made.
Top Secret! more than stands on its own two feet alongside their other classics like
Airplane! (1980) and
Police Squad! (1982). Achingly funny and inventive, it also doubles as surprisingly competent and enjoyable rock 'n' roll musical. Who knew that Val Kilmer could sing and shimmy so well? I've read that this film is apparently Weird Al Yankovic's all-time favorite. Quite frankly, I'd be sorely disappointed in the universe if it
wasn't. And after watching the book-store scene, the backwards sequences from his
Amish Paradise music video suddenly make a lot more sense...
